Historical Event Memoir
A significant historical event I have lived through is the Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting. This was a tragic and horrible shooting that took place at a small elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut in which twenty students and six faculty members were killed. This event is significant because it was the largest mass shooting at an elementary school in the United States. Every news channel, radio and talk show were talking about this, about how horrible and messed up it was. I remember that St. Matthews had shut off the wifi hoping that no one would see that there had just been a mass shooting. I was in the fifth grade and we were in the middle of class when the wifi suddenly went out. At the time my classmates thought nothing of it but when I heard it on the radio on the way home from school I was stunned. That night I sat there laying in my bed thinking about "how could someone do this" or "WHY would someone do this"? The event affected me indirectly, because I personally had no connections to the school or any of the students. The world was significantly changed by the event because we realized that it was incredibly easy for this man to walk in and kill all these people. It showed us that schools need to be more prepared and that teachers will need to know how to defend themselves. I was changed by the event because I realized that there are some very evil, bad people out there and that they are capable of doing things like that shooting. This happened on December 14, 2012 about two weeks from Christmas, such tragedy during a very joyous season. In conclusion, I believe this event will live on in my memory as the horrible school shooting at Sandy Hook.
I am from waves,
from smashed windows and gates,
I am from a blue and yellow volleyball.
I am from a dark red baseball,
sailing across the field
faster then the eye can track.
I'm from the dog beach,
a retriever swimming through the waves.
Im from the fighter plane
my grandpa used to fly.
I'm from the store
that sold every single food
To the moon and back,
again and again.
To the house that smelt like chocolate.
I am from all those--
and so many more--
I'm from the house that is high, but low
I live on Pacific Coast Highway in a small box-like house on the shore of the ocean. There are pros and cons of living on PCH and next to the ocean, the houses look like a row of dominos and if someone was to push over one they would all fall down. I also live very close to a restaurant called Moonshadows and it is awfully crowded on the weekends. Finally, the neighbors I have and used to have along with a crazy guy who has smashed my parents cars windows 8 times now.
Living on the highway has many pros and cons, along with living on the ocean. Some of the cons of living on PCH are the sound of relentless cars buzzing by my house or the honking of cars that want to turn onto the side of the road. Also, I always have to leave early in case there is traffic which can change a 10-minute drive to an hour-long drive. I find that there is nothing good about living on PCH. However, there are many pros about living on the ocean. First of all, it is on the ocean, so I can swim whenever I want to. Also, there is a small private beach to the right of our house which only a few people have access to, and we can use it at anytime. Finally, there are always dogs on the beach to the right which I find a huge bonus because I love dogs. The main downside of living on the ocean is that, if the waves are large and strong, the house is going to shake and shudder and it becomes very hard to fall asleep.
All the houses in my little row of houses are really boxy and would look exactly alike if they didn't use different paint or materials. Also, many of the houses have one entrance to two different houses like mine. There is also this one house on my street that looks like nobody has ever lived in it. It has no windows. It looks like it used to be blue but now it is some grayish blue color, it also has a massive whale picture on it. There is also a restaurant one minute away if you walk there, it is called Moonshadows and there is also a bar right next to it called the Blue Lounge. Moonshadows has a large neon blue sign that sticks out. So I always know when I am close to my house.
When I first moved into Malibu, there was nobody in the house to the right of us, but there were some very nice and amazing people to the right of us. Their names are Larry and Georgine. Georgine is one of the first female divers to get into the diving hall of fame, and Larry is an emergency doctor. He was the very first doctor to get to Haiti, and has done many other incredible things. However, after one month 2 college-age guys moved in next to us, and at first they seemed ok. But, they then started partying, first until midnight, then until one, and then it went on until 5 in the morning, and they broke two of our chairs and our table. After two months they moved out though. Luckily two new neighbors then came in, and it turned out they were very nice and had adorable bulldogs. Finally, recently an unknown person has been coming around 4 in the morning and has been smashing my parents' cars.
In conclusion, life in Malibu may be good or bad, but it is always interesting.
Urban legends are a more modern form of folklore, such as how we put up pumpkins at Halloween to keep away evil spirits. It is a myth that has no proof or evidence that it is true. It is a form of gossip about something or someone that they know nothing about.
